    Test Preparation Tips

    1. Keep up with reading assignments throughout the course so there will be no need to cram!
    2. Review the materials a little at a time, including information from early in the semester, so nothing will be a surprise!
    3. Ask questions, try to predict what the test will cover, and review those areas more, without forgetting everything else!
    4. Review old handouts, notes, quizzes, exams, and papers for clues and information you may have forgotten.
    5. If your instructor does not return old tests, ask if you can schedule a time to come in and look at them.
    6. Learn and study your instructor's "test technique:" the types of questions they favor, if they prefer long detailed answers or short consice answers, if they like important dates, etc.
    7. Use questions from your texts to help study!
    8. Study alone - and then study with other students!
    9. Give yourself a good night's sleep and well-balenced diet so you will not be tired or hungry during the test!

    Test Taking Tips

    1. Be on time and come fully prepared with any materials you need.
    2. Read the directions at least twice to make sure you understand what is expected.
    3. Look over the test to see what kinds of questions there are, and to give yourself an idea of how long you should allot for each area.
    4. Read each question very carefully - look out for absolute words like "always" and "never".
    5. Take your time, think carefully and don't panic - don't let other students leaving distract or rush you!
    6. Be sure to make arrangements with your instructor if you will miss a test, or need to make one up.
    7. Don't linger on one question too long - mark your best guess and come back to the question if time permits.
    8. Be careful about changing your first answers without good reason - your first choices are more likely to be correct.
    9. Write down any formulas, equations or rules you had to memorize before actually working on the test itself.
    10. Always show your work - this often leads to partial credit even if the answer is wrong.
    11. Do not be in a hurry - look over your test for careless errors like number transposition or a decimal point in the wrong place.
    12. Use simple and correct words - do not abbreviate or use slang. Check your spelling and punctuation. Write legibly and neatly - print if your printing is better!

How To Learn New Words Fast?

    Written by Ulugbek Nurmukhamedov

After you know the translation/meaning of the new words, now it is time to learn their collocations. What does it mean? Words collocate or occur together with other words. Words do not come alone.
Imagine that you want to learn the word "issue.” If you would like to learn this word and use it in your speaking or writing, you would probably learn it better if you learn particular verbs (raise an issue; address an issue etc) or adjectives (controversial issue; key issues; big issues; major issues etc) it is used. By doing so, you will also be able to learn some of the other useful words.

To illustrate my point, I would like to present one more example. You might know the word "appointment” and its meaning (in Russian or Uzbek). But this does not mean that you already know its usage. If you are aware of verb + appointment (make an appointment; have an appointment; schedule an appointment; cancel an appointment) or adjective + appointment (dental appointment) or appointment + preposition (appointment with somebody), you will be an accurate and fluent English speaker.

In addition, you will use more descriptive words in your English. If you would like to learn more about collocations, visit my youtube video which illustrates a collocations section on Cambridge Advanced Learner’s Dictionary. The link is as follow: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jRi-a78NBWg

Questions to think about: 1) Did you understand the concept of collocations? 2) If you learned some new words last week, do you know their collocations?

    Vocabulary Building

A good vocabulary is crucial to academic success. You will become a better student as you increase your word power. As you increase your vocabulary, you increase your reading ability that in turn should improve your critical thinking skills. A good vocabulary is the basis of understanding what you read and learn.
Memorization of lists is one of the most accepted ways of learning vocabulary. This is a good exercise for short term studying, but you often do not retain the information that you have learned for a particular class or test. Memorization is good for standardized testing.
You can often figure out the meaning of the word from reading in context. Read through the entire paragraph to see if you can get a meaning of the word. Figure out what the reading is exploring and try to learn the word.
The best way to learn a definition and to remember a word is to look it up the dictionary. Find the word, sound it out and spell it. Notice the syllables in the word. Read all the definitions listed. Always keep a dictionary on hand during your college career.
Another method of learning vocabulary is similar to concept mapping. Have a blank sheet of paper and put the word that you are trying to learn and remember in the center of the page. In another box, write down a description of the word. Be sure to keep the description short. Draw two columns. In one, list items that describe or would help you to remember the word. In the other column, write down examples that would be similar to the word. By using all these mapping tools, your chances of remembering a word are much higher.

Try to study at the time of day you work best. Some people work well early in the morning, others late at night. You know what works best for you. What time is best for you?
